Screaming Frog review: still the best technical SEO tool?

Screaming Frog is the tool I always reach for when a site needs a technical dig, error by error. What it does, what it costs, and who it is right for.

When a site needs to be dug through error by error, Screaming Frog is the tool I always reach for. It is not the prettiest tool in the box, but it is the most thorough, and in technical SEO thoroughness is what counts.

What Screaming Frog does

Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls an entire site, page by page, the way a search engine would, and then lists everything that matters: missing title tags, duplicate meta descriptions, broken links, redirect chains, missing alt text, and structured data. It is a desktop program rather than a cloud service, which means the crawl runs locally on your machine, fast, and without the data being sent to a third party along the way.

What it is best at

Completeness. Where other tools give you an overview, Screaming Frog goes deep on every single URL on the site. For a large webshop with thousands of product pages it is often the only tool that truly finds the systematic errors repeating across the entire catalog.

Redirect chains and crawl budget. Especially valuable on large sites where Google does not crawl everything equally often. Finding and fixing unnecessary redirect chains is one of the fixes that returns the most for the effort on an established site.

Structured data validation. It can check whether schema markup is set up correctly across the whole site, not just on the pages you happened to check manually.

What it demands

Screaming Frog is not a beginner’s tool. The free version is limited to 500 URLs, which is enough for a small site, but the full value comes with the paid license and with knowing what you are looking for. It is a tool that answers specific questions, not a dashboard that tells you what to look at.

Screaming Frog vs. Ahrefs’ Site Audit

Ahrefs’ built-in Site Audit covers much of the same ground and is easier to get started with. The difference shows on large, complex sites, where Screaming Frog’s depth and its flexibility in filtering and exporting data make a real difference. For most smaller sites Ahrefs’ Site Audit is sufficient. For larger webshops and technical migrations I always supplement with Screaming Frog.

I use it as a fixed part of every technical SEO review I do. If you want a technical audit of your own site, book a no-strings meeting and we will look at what is really holding the site back.
