SEO consultant vs SEO agency: what is the difference?
A freelance SEO consultant and an SEO agency solve the same task in two different ways. What really separates them, and when each model fits best.
“Should I choose a freelancer or an agency?” is one of the questions I get asked most often, and the honest answer is that it depends on the task more than on who is “best”. Here are the concrete differences.
Who does the work?
With a freelance SEO consultant, it is the same person all the way through: the one you talk to at the sales meeting is the one who does the analysis, and the one who carries out the work. At an agency, it is often three different people. A senior sells the project, an account manager coordinates it, and a (possibly junior) specialist executes it.
That does not make the agency model bad. It means you should ask yourself how important it is for you to know and speak directly with the person doing the hands-on work on your site.
Capacity vs. proximity
An agency can put more hands on a large task, and a freelancer cannot scale the same way. In return, a freelancer is typically cheaper, because there is no office, sales department or project management layer to finance. It is a classic trade-off between capacity and proximity, rather than a question of quality.
When does each model fit best?
- Agency, when the task is large and composite. If you need technical SEO, content, links and advertising at the same time, and it needs to happen fast, an agency’s capacity can be worth paying for.
- Freelancer, when you want one experienced specialist close by. Fits best for well-defined or ongoing tasks where you do not need a whole team, but want to avoid the agency’s layers.
What really decides the result
Whichever model you choose, the result is rarely decided by whether it is a freelancer or an agency. It is decided by experience, by whether the person or team understands your industry, and by whether the work truly gets done thoroughly and consistently rather than superficially. A skilled freelancer beats a mediocre agency, and the other way around.
I have put together a broader comparison, which also includes in-house as a third option, on the page about agency, freelancer or in-house. If you want a concrete take on what fits your situation, book a no-strings meeting and we will look at it honestly together. If a freelancer is the wrong fit for you, I would rather tell you right away.
