What is a data warehouse? And when do you need one?

A data warehouse gathers data from all your systems in one place so you can analyze it together. Here is what it is and when it makes sense for a webshop.

As a business grows, the amount of data grows even faster. At some point it becomes unmanageable to pull numbers out of ten systems and try to stitch them together in a spreadsheet. This is where a data warehouse comes in.

What is a data warehouse?

A data warehouse is a central store where data from all your systems is gathered and structured so it can be analyzed as a whole. Instead of Shopify, Google Ads, Meta, your accounting and your email each holding their own version of the truth, a data warehouse brings it all together in one place in a shared format.

Think of it as one large, well ordered library instead of stacks of paper spread across ten offices.

What is it used for?

Once the data is gathered, you can analyze across sources. For example:

  • Which marketing channels create the most valuable customers over time.
  • How margin develops across products and seasons.
  • When it makes sense to scale, and when it does not.

This is the foundation under serious Business Intelligence and under being able to steer by POAS rather than ROAS alone.

When do you need one?

Not everyone needs a data warehouse. Many webshops get far with Google Analytics, Search Console and a well built dashboard. A data warehouse only becomes relevant when:

  • You have several systems that need to talk to each other.
  • The volume of data has outgrown what spreadsheets can carry.
  • Decisions require you to connect sources that do not naturally line up.

Start with the need, not the tool

The biggest mistake is building an advanced setup before you know which questions you want answered. I always start with the decision that has to be made, and build only the data structure needed to make it. Data has value only when it leads to action.
