What Is E-commerce? A Guide to Selling Online
E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services online. Here is what it covers, the main platforms, and what it takes to make an online store profitable.
E-commerce is one of the biggest shifts in how the world shops, yet the idea behind it is simple: buying and selling online. Here is the full picture, and what separates the online stores that make money from the ones that never quite do.
What does e-commerce mean?
E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. It covers everything from the large online store to the small seller on a marketplace, and it spans physical products, digital goods and subscriptions.
The main platforms
Most online stores are built on one of a handful of platforms:
- Shopify, fast to get started with and strong for pure e-commerce. It is the platform behind the stores I run.
- WooCommerce, built on WordPress and offering plenty of freedom.
- Magento and others, used by larger companies with complex needs.
The right choice depends on where you are today and where you want to go. No single platform is right for everyone.
What decides whether an online store makes money?
An online store is more than a digital shop. It is a machine with many parts that all have to work together:
- Traffic, getting the right people through the door. This is where SEO, Google Ads and paid social come in.
- Conversion, turning those visitors into buyers. This is the job of conversion rate optimization.
- Repeat sales, bringing customers back. That is where email marketing pays for itself.
- Profit, having something left once everything is paid for.
The last point is what makes the difference. Many stores chase revenue and forget that only profit pays the bills.
From webshop to business
What I care about is turning an online store into a real business. That means looking at the whole chain from click to repeat sale and steering by the bottom line the whole way. Want a pair of experienced eyes on your store? Book a meeting and we will find where the biggest gain is hiding.
