CNAME

A CNAME record points a domain name to another domain name instead of directly to an IP address. It is often used for subdomains that need to follow an external service. If the target service changes its IP, the CNAME follows automatically.

A subdomain for an email service is set up with a CNAME, so it always points correctly even when the provider switches servers behind the scenes.
