SEO and optimisation Deep guide

DoFollow

DoFollow describes an ordinary link without a nofollow attribute, which search engines can follow and pass authority through. This type of link is the default, and it is the one that contributes to the recipient page's ranking strength. The term is mostly used to distinguish such links from nofollow links.

An editorial dofollow link from a relevant article can contribute positively to the recipient's authority.

In-depth guide

Strictly speaking, the word dofollow doesn’t exist as an attribute in the code. It’s simply the name for a perfectly ordinary link that the search engine is allowed to follow. When a link isn’t marked with nofollow, sponsored or ugc, it is by definition dofollow, and some of the linking page’s authority flows across with it. That’s the value commonly known as link juice.

A dofollow link just looks like this, with no rel attribute blocking it:

<a href="https://example.com">Anchor text</a>

By comparison, a nofollow link passes on no authority at all:

<a href="https://example.com" rel="nofollow">Anchor text</a>

The approach is the same as for nofollow, you’re just looking for the absence of a block.

  1. Right-click the link and select “Inspect”, or press F12 to open developer tools.
  2. Find the highlighted <a> tag.
  3. If there’s no rel attribute with nofollow, sponsored or ugc, the link is dofollow, and it counts as an endorsement.

Why it matters

Dofollow links from relevant, trustworthy sites are one of the strongest forces in SEO, because they act as votes. A single dofollow link from a respected media outlet carries more weight than many links from irrelevant sites. The goal isn’t as many links as possible, but the right ones, and a natural profile always contains a mix of dofollow and nofollow.
