Authority

Authority is the trust search engines and AI assistants assign to a source based on how often, and how credibly, it gets mentioned, cited, and linked to elsewhere on the web. It is built primarily through content, you become the source people actually want to mention and cite because the content is deep and trustworthy enough, while links typically follow as a natural side effect. The higher the authority, the easier a brand or person is to find, both in classic search and in AI answers.

When someone Googles a brand or a person's name and gets relevant, well-ranked results back instead of an empty page, that is usually a sign of authority that has been built up over time.

In-depth guide

Authority is a result of what the web says about you

The “World Wide Web” is called a web because it is a network of pages that mention, cite, and link to each other. When search engines and AI assistants like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Copilot answer a question about you, a person, or a brand, they piece the picture together from that whole network: articles, mentions, social profiles, podcasts, and links. The broader and more coherent that footprint is, the more authority you get assigned.

Content is the primary driver. You become the source others actually want to mention and cite, because the content is deeper, more honest, or more current than the alternatives, and that is what drives mentions and links as a natural side effect.

Link building, meaning actively chasing links from other sites, is a footnote in that picture today. It was something a lot of people were very focused on a few years ago, but the enthusiasm has dropped considerably, as search engines and AI systems have gotten better at reading the broader picture of mentions rather than just counting links.

My take

You do not show authority by not producing anything. That applies whether you are a company, a person, a brand, or an athlete. Authority is not a state you declare for yourself, it is the result of having put something visible and verifiable out there over time, that others genuinely find worth mentioning.

The easiest way to check whether a brand or a person has authority is to Google the name. Do relevant, well-ranked results come up, or is there mostly empty space? That empty space does not close itself, it takes ongoing production of content that is actually worth pointing to.
