Link building
Link building is the deliberate effort to build relevant backlinks to a website. The work can include content partnerships, guest posts, PR and creating material that others will naturally want to link to. The purpose is to strengthen the site's authority and, in turn, its rankings.
A company might publish an original industry survey that media outlets and blogs subsequently reference through links.

Still a real signal, just not what I chase most myself anymore
A link from another site is effectively a third-party endorsement, and it still counts toward how much trust search engines and AI assistants assign to a source. It has not become irrelevant.
What has changed is my own approach to it. I was very focused on active link building myself back in 2019, when I was building around 100 links a day. Today I barely do it anymore, and I practically never buy links. I still build a few from my own side now and then, but it takes up a fraction of the time it used to.
Why the priority has shifted
Both search engines and AI systems have gotten better at reading the broader picture of how often a source is genuinely mentioned and cited across the web, instead of only counting links. Solid content today drives natural mentions, citations, and links as a side effect, without needing to chase them actively. That is the full thinking behind How to Build Online Authority.
When active link building still makes sense
Active link building still makes sense as a supplement, particularly in competitive niches where content alone is not enough to stand out. But it should supplement strong content, not attempt to compensate for thin content.
