Redirect

A redirect automatically sends a user and a search engine from one URL to another. It is used when content moves or pages are removed, so dead links are avoided and traffic is preserved. A permanent 301 redirect also passes on most of the original URL's ranking strength.

When restructuring a site's URLs, old addresses can be forwarded with redirects so earned authority is preserved.
