Baseline

A baseline is a starting level against which later results are measured to assess the effect of a change. Without a clear baseline, it is hard to determine whether an improvement is due to the effort or to ordinary fluctuation.

Before a new campaign, the current conversion rate is recorded as a baseline, so the effect can be assessed afterwards.
