SSL certificate

An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between browser and server so that data cannot be read in transit. It is the prerequisite for HTTPS and is typically shown as a padlock in the browser's address bar. The certificate also confirms that the sender is who it claims to be.

A webshop without a valid certificate gets a warning in the browser, which scares visitors away and hurts its ranking in search results.
