Metric

A metric is a quantitative measure, in other words a number, used in analysis, for example sessions, revenue, or pageviews. Metrics are combined with dimensions, which describe the context, to provide insight.

Number of sessions is a metric, while traffic source is the dimension that shows where the sessions came from.
