A soft bounce is a temporary delivery failure, for example because the inbox is full, the server is down, or the email is too large. Sending systems typically retry delivery over a period of time. Repeated soft bounces to the same address can eventually be treated as a hard bounce.
An email to a full inbox results in a soft bounce, and the system attempts to deliver it again over the following hours.
