Spam filter

A spam filter is the mechanism used by mail providers to assess incoming emails and sort out unwanted mail. The filter weighs sender reputation, content, authentication and the recipient's past behaviour. Emails that fail to pass end up in the spam folder or are rejected outright.

An email with plenty of spam-typical words and missing authentication gets caught by the recipient's spam filter and lands in junk mail.
